Gifts for Children with Autism, sensory or learning disabilities or vulnerabilities – Stimulate their senses

St. Enoch Centre is proud to support Scottish Autism, the centre’s official charity partner, and as part of its Christmas gifting special the centre has worked with the charity to help identify some gifts that will be fun as well as practical.

As always – one gift doesn’t fit all so be sure to home in on hobbies and interests to find loved ones something truly special – but some things to think about, include:

Trending toys such as Lego, Trollz, Disney characters and games can develop commination skills and be a valuable source of friendship as well as providing different noises and textures for children to play with.

Alternatively, gifts that offer a sensory experience are an excellent way to engage both hyper and hypo sensitivities – for people who seek this type of input. Suggestions include: perfumed toiletries (like soaps and bubble baths), lamps and lighting (twinkle lights and lava lamps), trampolines, pop up tents, headphones (both for listening to music and cutting out sound input) as well as arts and crafts materials.

Items that focus on routine can also make for great gifts while also supporting the development of planning skills. Calendars are great for this and are particularly timely for the New Year.

As when buying any gift, it is important to think about the individual and their personal interests and how they may use the present.Notebooks – Debenhams – MW by

As part of its festive celebrations, Santa is opening his Grotto in-centre during specific “quiet” sessions, designed for children with autism or with sensory or learning disabilities or vulnerabilities. Quiet sessions will be held between 10am and 11am on Sunday 11, 18 and 25 November as well as Sunday 2, 9 and 16 December.

St. Enoch also has a quiet space where shoppers can go and take time out. The quiet and safe space is open seven days a week during the centre’s opening hours. When using the room for the first time, customers must register at customer services on the first floor. Advanced registrations can be taken by calling 0141 204 3900.
